Have you heard the latest rumors or should I say news about Rapidshare? Looks like they are going to do serious damage to their own business by choosing a drastic action in order to fight piracy. Yes, they are up against people who are downloading copyrighted material using their web service. Well, we all do know that piracy is not a good thing (well, most of us) but as the biggest or should I say the most famous file hosting company, they should know that everybody knows the reason they got rich was mainly because people buying accounts to download warez (argue if you want but that is the naked truth). With them planning to redirect people who are looking for a illegal files to a page where it sell the legal files, I’m not sure how many days would they survived.
It’s not like I’m against it but in business point of view, my honest opinion is that this planned action if it really being implemented by Rapidshare team will cripple their own revenue stream. Think of it this way, if a user who clicked on Rapidshare’s download link and sees a sales landing page, in a matter of second they will click back button and try another file hosting service such as hotfile, megaupload and such.
Most people especially those avid uploaders will find this news to their unsatisfactory but I guess in order to keep themselves away from lawsuits and courts order, Rapidshare need to do anything they can think of even if that means shutting down most of their active user base.
